HPV and Pre-existing Conditions: What You Need to Know

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common viral infection that affects the skin and mucous membranes. It is not typically considered a pre-existing condition, as it is usually acquired through sexual contact or skin-to-skin contact. However, in some cases, HPV can be spread through childbirth, and a newborn may develop respiratory papillomatosis, a rare condition that affects the airways. In such cases, HPV may be considered a pre-existing condition.

It's important to note that while HPV is a common infection, not all strains of HPV cause medical problems. Most HPV infections clear up on their own and do not cause any symptoms or health problems. However, some strains of HPV can cause warts, genital warts, and certain types of cancer, including cervical cancer.
