Understanding HPV Antigens: Types and Immune Response
An HPV antigen is a protein that is expressed by the human papillomavirus (HPV). These antigens are recognized by the immune system, and the production of antibodies against HPV antigens is essential for protection against HPV infection.
There are two types of HPV antigens:
* Early antigens: These antigens are expressed during the early stages of the viral life cycle, before the virus has produced new viral particles.
* Late antigens: These antigens are expressed during the late stages of the viral life cycle, after the virus has produced new viral particles.
HPV antigens are important targets for vaccine development. Vaccines against HPV are currently available that can prevent infection with the most common types of HPV that cause cervical cancer.
