Understanding AIDS: Causes, Discovery, and Impact
AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. It is a chronic, potentially life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV damages the body's immune system, making it more vulnerable to infections and certain types of cancer.
AIDS was first discovered in the early 1980s in the United States. The first cases were reported among gay men in New York City and California. Initially, the condition was referred to as "gay-related immune deficiency" (GRID). However, it soon became apparent that the disease was not limited to any specific group and could affect anyone exposed to HIV.
