Origin of AIDS: History, Origins & Early Cases
The earliest known cases of AIDS occurred in the 1950s in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). However, the virus that causes AIDS, HIV-1, likely originated in chimpanzees in west-central Africa. It is believed that the virus was transmitted to humans through contact with infected animal blood or tissue. The first reported cases of AIDS in the United States were in 1981.HIV & AIDS - Related Articles
