Understanding Vaginal Fluid Leakage in the Final Weeks of Pregnancy
The fluid you are leaking may be amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid is the fluid that surrounds your baby in the womb. It is made up of water, electrolytes, proteins, and hormones. It helps to cushion your baby from injury, maintain a constant temperature, and allow for movement.
Leaking amniotic fluid is a sign that you are in labor. Labor is the process by which your baby is born. It begins with contractions, which are tightening of the muscles of the uterus. As the contractions get stronger and closer together, they will eventually cause the cervix to dilate (open) and the baby to be born.
If you are leaking amniotic fluid, it is important to call your doctor or midwife right away. They will want to monitor you and your baby to make sure that everything is progressing normally.
