Things That Don't Lower Blood Pressure: Understanding Risk Factors

The following does not decrease the blood pressure:
* High sodium intake. Eating too much sodium (salt) can raise blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends limiting sodium intake to no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day.
* Being overweight or obese. Excess weight can increase the risk of high blood pressure.
* Smoking. Smoking cigarettes can damage the blood vessels and raise blood pressure.
* Drinking too much alcohol. Drinking too much alcohol can raise blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends that men limit alcohol intake to two drinks per day and women limit intake to one drink per day.
* Lack of physical activity. Regular physical activity can help to lower blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends getting at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity most days of the week.
* Stress. Chronic stress can raise blood pressure.
