Understanding Normal Blood Pressure: Ranges & Hypertension
A normal blood pressure is generally considered to be between 90/60 mmHg and 120/80 mmHg.
* Systolic blood pressure, the top number, measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats.
* Diastolic blood pressure, the bottom number, measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest between beats.
If your blood pressure is consistently above 140/90 mmHg, it is considered high blood pressure, or hypertension. Hypertension is a serious medical condition that can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and other health problems.
