Soy and Blood Pressure: What the Research Says
Research indicates that consumption of soy products may reduce high blood pressure. The Baylor of College of Medicine in Houston, funded by the National Institutes of Health, has evaluated the effect that soy isoflavones have on hypertension, specifically on menopausal women. More studies will be done to determine how quickly soy affects blood pressure after being ingested. Keep in mind, though, that some studies dispute the benefits of soy on blood pressure and heart health.
Instructions
Replace your ground beef with soy crumbles. The look and taste of the two are almost identical. When recipes call for ground beef you can substitute the soy crumbles. Note that they are not suitable for replacing uncooked ground beef in recipes such as meatballs or meatloaf.
Pour soy on your breakfast cereal. A variety of soy-based milk substitutes are available from your local grocer. Choose from regular, vanilla flavored or chocolate. Soy milk, blended with fresh fruit and ice cubes makes a delicious smoothie for breakfast or an anytime treat.
Toss your salad with tofu. Made from cold-pressed soy curd, tofu replaces meat or dairy products in salads and other dishes. Cube some firm tofu, gently sauté it with garlic and onions, and then add it to your salad for a tasty dish.
Spice up your breakfast menu with sausage and bacon alternatives made from soy. They come already prepared and frozen for your convenience. Just heat and serve or include them in a breakfast omelet with eggs. You also can make scrambled tofu to replace eggs in your diet.
