Herpes Transmission: Risk During an Outbreak & Prevention
Herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are common viruses that cause oral and genital herpes. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be transmitted through direct contact with infected skin or mucous membranes. This can occur during oral sex, vaginal sex, or anal sex.
If your partner has an outbreak of herpes, it is important to avoid contact with the infected area to reduce the risk of transmission. You should also use condoms during sex to further reduce the risk of infection.
If you think you may have been exposed to herpes, it is important to see a doctor or other healthcare provider for testing and treatment.
