First Aid for Heat Exhaustion & Stroke: Essential Reminders for Airmen
When treating someone for heat exhaustion or stroke, remind the airman to:- Call for medical assistance ASAP.
- Move the casualty to a cool place, preferably shaded.
- Remove excess clothing and cool the person down by any available means- immersion in cool water, spray mist, wet sponging, fanning.
- If conscious, give the person cold fluids to drink.
- Have the person lie down with feet elevated.
- Loosen tight clothing.
- Monitor vital signs and level of consciousness.
- If the person vomits, turn them on their side to prevent choking.
- Stay with the person until medical assistance arrives.
