The inferior vena cava is the large blood vessel that carries deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart. It is the largest vein in the body and is formed by the union of the two common iliac veins in the abdomen. The inferior vena cava ascends through the abdomen and thorax and enters the right atrium of the heart.
