A History of Congestive Heart Failure: Discovery and Timeline
Congestive heart failure has been known for centuries. The earliest records of the condition date back to ancient Egypt and Greece, where it was described as a chronic illness characterized by swelling of the legs and shortness of breath. In the 16th century, the Italian physician Girolamo Cardano provided a detailed description of the symptoms and treatment of congestive heart failure. The term "congestive heart failure" was first used in 1852 by the British physician Richard Quain.
