What is the purpose of heart?
Heart FunctionThe heart's main function is to pump oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. This is done through four chambers; two atria collect incoming blood, and two ventricles pump blood out.
- Pulmonary circulation: deoxygenated blood pumps from the right ventricle to the lungs to pick up oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
- Systemic circulation: oxygenated blood returns to the heart's left atrium, then leaves through the left ventricle to the rest of the body.
Additional Functions
- Regulating blood pressure: Heart rate and pumping strength can increase or decrease to ensure sufficient blood flow to organs.
- Distributing hormones and immune cells: The heart carries chemicals and cells throughout the body to maintain homeostasis and fight infection.
- Maintaining electrolyte balance: The heart balances sodium, potassium, and other minerals essential for bodily functions.
- Regulating body temperature: Heart activity generates heat, which helps keep body temperature stable.
