Why do kidney infections cause a headache?

Kidney infections, also called pyelonephritis, do not typically cause headaches. If a kidney infection is severe or has spread to the bloodstream (sepsis), it may cause a variety of symptoms, including headaches. However, headaches are not a common symptom of kidney infections.
