Medical Conditions Linked to Hair Loss: Causes & Treatments

Hair loss can occur at any age, and it also affects both men and women. There are several different medical conditions that can cause it. Some of these conditions are the result of other conditions.

Scarring

• Cicatricial alopecia is a condition where the follicles get scarred through inflammation, which causes hair to stop growing. Lupus is an example of a condition that can cause this scarring to take place.

Treatment

• Cancer treatments can have side effects. Chemotherapy and radiation are two treatments that can cause hair loss.

Meds

• Taking certain medications can also cause side effects to the body. Hair loss can be one of the side effects.

Diseases

• Hormonal diseases can also cause hair loss. Hyperthyroidism, diabetes and polycystic ovarian syndrome are a few examples.

Mental Illness

• There is a mental condition that causes people to pull their hair out, which can cause hair loss. It is called trichotillomania.
