Understanding the Vagina: Its Role in Anatomy and Physiology
The vagina
The vagina is a muscular tube that connects the uterus to the outside of the body. It is located behind the bladder and in front of the rectum. The vagina is about 4 inches long and has a slightly acidic pH level. It is lined with mucous membranes that help to protect it from infection. The vagina is the birth canal, and it is also the pathway for menstrual blood to flow out of the body.
