How do you diagnose fecal impaction?
Fecal impaction is a condition in which hard, dry stool becomes stuck in the rectum and cannot be passed. It is a common problem in older adults, people who are bedridden, and those who have certain medical conditions, such as constipation, diabetes, or Parkinson's disease.
Fecal impaction can be diagnosed with a physical exam and a digital rectal exam. During a physical exam, the doctor will look for signs of impaction, such as a hard, distended abdomen and rectal fullness. A digital rectal exam involves the doctor inserting a lubricated finger into the rectum to feel for impacted stool.
Other tests that may be used to diagnose fecal impaction include:
* X-rays of the abdomen
* Computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen
* Colonoscopy
Treatment for fecal impaction typically involves disimpaction, which is the removal of the impacted stool. This can be done with enemas, laxatives, or manual disimpaction. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the impaction.
