G-Tube Dislodgement: What To Do & When To Seek Medical Help
If your G-tube (gastrostomy tube) comes out, you should:
1. Stay calm and try not to panic.
2. Call your doctor or the emergency department immediately. They will be able to give you further instructions and may need to come and replace the G-tube.
3. Cover the opening with a clean cloth or bandage to prevent infection.
4. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
5. Avoid eating or drinking anything by mouth until you have spoken to your doctor.
6. If the G-tube is still in place, flush it with water to keep it clear.
7. If the G-tube has come out completely, do not try to reinsert it yourself.
