People with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes.
Down syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. Typically, humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46 chromosomes. An extra copy of chromosome 21 creates this difference, creating 47 chromosomes instead.
