ANSI Standards for Eyeglass Lenses
The American National Institute of Standards (ANSI) is a non-government, nonprofit organization providing standards for a variety of consumer products including eyeglasses. It looks for voluntary consensus on standards.-
ANSI History
-
ANSI began as an organization of electrical engineers about1916. Soon afterward, they invited mechanical engineers to join the organization. During World War II, they provide standards for many of the products used in the war. The ANSI acronym was adopted in 1969.
Eyeglass Standards
-
In 2010, ANSI provides standards for many eyeglass products. ANSI Z80.1 - 2005 provides standards for prescription ophthalmic lenses. These include resistance to scratching and standards on breakage. ANSI Z80.5 - 2004 checks standards on eyeglass frames. Frames must resist breakage and bending to receive ANSI approval. They also provide standards for contact lenses and provide standards for corneal reshaping.
Other Lenses
-
ANSI not only provides standards for prescription lenses, but for a variety of other products. Sunglasses, protective eye wear, and binoculars also have ANSI standards.
