How to Manage Being Visually Impaired
Impaired vision, due to cataracts or other medical conditions, is challenging but manageable through adjustments to your daily routine. You may require support from family and friends, as well as changes in your physical activity, to prevent accidental injury. While these changes in your physical activities may seem daunting, used in combination with medication, such changes will improve the quality of your life.Things You'll Need
- Magnifying glass
- Large-brimmed hat
- Sunglasses
Instructions
Use adequate lighting for reading. Poor lighting affects your ability to see clearly, and can exacerbate your vision impairment. A light bulb with at least 75 watts is ideal for comfortable reading.
Avoid driving at night. Night driving is stressful on the eyes due to the glare from streetlights, traffic lights and the headlights of other cars. Drive during the day or when it's sunny outside to stay safe while driving.
Use a magnifying glass to increase the size of text while reading. The fine print in books are a strain on your eyes, and can cause fatigue if you read for an extended period of time.
Wear sunglasses during sunny days to reduce the glare from the sun. Alternately, wear a large-brimmed hat to protect your eyes if your eyes are light-sensitive.
Visit your optometrist every 6 months if you notice your vision is continually changing. The most up-to-date prescription for your glasses or contacts is essential for managing vision disorders.
