Optic Nerve Failure: Symptoms, Causes & Vision Loss
Loss of vision. The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain. If the optic nerve fails, vision will be lost.
Other symptoms. In addition to loss of vision, optic nerve failure can also cause other symptoms, such as:
* Pain in the eye
* Swelling of the eye
* Drooping of the eyelid
* Double vision
* Blurred vision
* Floaters
* Light sensitivity
Causes. Optic nerve failure can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
* Trauma
* Infection
* Stroke
* Diabetes
* Glaucoma
* Multiple sclerosis
* Certain medications
Treatment. Treatment for optic nerve failure depends on the underlying cause. In some cases, treatment can be successful in restoring vision. However, in other cases, optic nerve failure may lead to permanent blindness.
