Why zachariah was blind?

Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, was not blind. According to the Gospel of Luke, Zechariah was struck dumb for a time as punishment for doubting the angel Gabriel's announcement that his wife Elizabeth would conceive a child in her old age. His speech returned after the birth of John.
