James Thurber's Eye Injury: The Story of His Lost Eye

In 1933, Thurber was accidentally poked in the left eye by his wife, who was trying to separate him from Alfred Lunt during a playful boxing match. The injury ruptured his left eyeball, and he had to have it surgically removed and replaced with a glass eye.
