Dry Eye Macular Degeneration: Understanding & Management
There are two types of age-related macular degeneration (AMD): The dry form is caused by the atrophy of the retina, and the wet type is caused by excessive blood-vessel growth on the retina. Both cause a deterioration of the macula, the center of the retina responsible for detail vision.-
Treatment for Dry Form
-
There is no treatment available to cure the dry form of AMD at this time. The dry form of AMD is more common than the wet form but typically has a less drastic loss in vision.
Suggested Diet for Dry Form
-
The progression of AMD may be slowed with vitamin supplements and antioxidants. Along with the supplements, a diet rich in green leafy vegetables is suggested.
Dealing with AMD
-
Many patients find low-vision aids, such as magnifying glasses, useful. In some cases, prescription glasses can also help.
Incidents
-
Most patients with AMD are more than 60 years old. When the condition occurs in younger people, it is known as macular dystrophy.
Early Signs
-
The first sign of AMD is usually a blurring of the central portion of vision accompanied by a loss of detail. This may cause straight lines to appear distorted.
