Understanding Morning Face Puffiness: Causes & Solutions
For many, waking up in the morning with a puffy face has become a far too common aspect of the aging process. Thankfully, there are a few simple steps that can be taken to alleviate the problem.-
Identification
-
Face puffiness is most noticeable around the eyes, with swollen areas, or bags, developing beneath the lower lid.
Cause
-
Lymphatic material pooling around the orbital area is the most common cause of morning face puffiness. Other possible causes include dehydration, which can lead to blood vessel enlargement and swelling, and inadequate diet, with a lack of fat, beta-carotene, and Vitamin C reducing skin suppleness.
Treatment
-
Massaging the puffy areas will help move out the lymphatic material. Cucumber contains a natural astringent. Applying cucumber slices to the eyes will reduce swelling, as will a peppermint beanbag eye pillow.
Prevention
-
Nighttime eye creams may be applied before bed to reduce the chances of morning puffiness. Gently massage the creams into the skin, working from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner.
Considerations
-
While dehydration can cause puffiness, so can excessive water retention. Avoid salty snacks before bed.
