Proper Eye Drop Application: A Step-by-Step Guide
People tend to be squeamish about putting anything into their eyes, be it contacts or eye drops. There are many ways to get over the squeamishness, but it takes practice and a steady hand. This becomes important if you have allergy eyes or a similar condition that requires regular application of moisturizing eye drops. Placing eye drops in the middle of the eye is best as it spreads the medication throughout the eye and keeps it working for as long as possible.Things You'll Need
- Bottle of eye drops
- Flat surface (optional)
Instructions
Tilt your head back, making the surface of your eye parallel is to the ground. You may also lie down on a flat surface, if you prefer.
Using the thumb and middle finger of the hand on the same side as the affected eye, pull the eyelids open.
Poise the eye drop bottle in the other hand just above the middle of the affected eye.
Allow yourself to blink and then hold the eyelids open as before. Either look to the far right or far left while squeezing the bottle to drop the appropriate number of eye drops into the eye.
Close your eyes for a few minutes to allow the drops to work.
