How Children Can Avoid Dravet Syndrome Triggers
There is no cure for Dravet syndrome, and not everything can be done to keep a child from having seizures, but there are some things that parents can do to reduce the risk:
- Regular Sleep: Having a strict bedtime routine is especially important for children with Dravet syndrome. It helps maintain consistency in their sleep schedule and minimizes the chances of seizures caused due to sleep deprivation.
- Reduce Stimulation: Overstimulating environments can trigger seizures. Loud sounds, bright lights, and sudden changes in routine should be avoided as much as possible. For example, covering or dimming bright lights, using earplugs in excessively noisy situations, and maintaining a calm environment at home can be beneficial.
- Avoid Hyperthermia: Fevers are a very common trigger for seizures. Cooling methods like sponging with lukewarm water, or placing a cool, wet towel over the child's forehead can help prevent or control fevers. Giving proper dosage of fever-control medication as soon as possible can also help.
- Nutrition and Diet: A ketogenic diet is effective in reducing the seizure frequency in about half of children with Dravet syndrome and a modified Atkin's diet (MAD) can also be helpful. Other options include the paleo diet, gluten-free diet, or a modified-Mediterranean diet. Always consult a dietician or nutritionist before implementing any dietary changes to ensure your child is getting the right balance of nutrients.
