Choosing the Right Cochlear Implant: A Comprehensive Guide
Choosing a cochlear implant can be a daunting task. There are three major brands: Cochlear, Advanced Bionics and Med El. Compare the processors, design, function and battery life when shopping a cochlear implant to determine which implant is a good fit.
Instructions
Identify the brands of cochlear implants that the implant team uses. Some implant teams work with only one brand or two, some work with all three.
Compare the components of each brand, including processors and magnets. How does each brand process sound and at what speed? Can the magnet covers/colors be changed?
Consider the design features of each brand. Consider the color choices of each.
Check the type of battery and battery life of each brand. Can rechargable batteries be used? How many batteries are needed? What is the average operating life of the batteries? What is the cost of the batteries per year?
Look into the number of programs that can be set and customized with each brand. These programs give the user some control over the sound that comes in the processor.
Determine the MRI compatibility with each brand. Some brands require minor surgery to remove the internal magnet and replace it after the MRI is complete.
Find out the brand's ability to accept future upgrades and software without additional surgery.
