History of Alcoholism: Origins and Early Definitions

The term alcoholism was first used in the early 19th century by the Swedish physician Magnus Huss to describe the chronic, excessive use of alcohol and its associated physical, mental, and behavioral problems. Before that, alcohol-related issues were commonly referred to as drunkenness, intemperance, or alcohol abuse.
