Safely Quitting Drugs: A Guide to Cold Turkey & Detox
Stopping a drug addiction cold turkey, or abruptly, is difficult. Most addicts have used drugs for years. Quitting suddenly is possible but requires willpower and determination.
Instructions
Seek counseling or medical help. Depending on the addiction, it may be harmful or even deadly to quit all at once. A licensed counselor can monitor the withdrawal. For cigarette withdrawal, it may not be necessary to seek a counselor.
Remove yourself from negative influences and enablers. Stay away from people and situations that hinder your progress. Throwing out any paraphernalia is crucial.
Get a good support system. Having a strong group of people around you who support you is as important as removing yourself from negative influences and enablers.
Keep Busy. Throw yourself into hobbies, work and productive activities.
