Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle presses on the sciatic nerve. This narrow muscle is located deep in the buttocks. The pain may be referred to a sciatica pain.

• Piriformis syndrome is characterized by pain, tingling and numbness in the buttocks and legs.

Over-the-Counter Pain Medications

• According to Spine Health, naproxen or Ibuprofen are often enough to combat piriformis syndrome pain. While anti-inflammatory medications do not target pain specifically, they can bring about pain relief by reducing swelling and inflammation that may be causing pain.

Prescription Pain Medications

• Pain may be alleviated with prescription-strength ibuprofen or muscle relaxers.

Other Medications

• Corticosteroid injections may reduce severe piriformis pain quickly; however, injections typically only provide temporary relief and may need to be repeated at regular intervals.
