Understanding the Quality of Life with Tay-Sachs Disease
The quality of life for someone with Tay-Sachs disease is extremely limited. The disease is characterized by progressive degeneration of the nervous system, which leads to a variety of physical and mental problems.
Physical problems:
- Difficulty swallowing
- Seizures
- Paralysis
-Blindness
-Deafness
-Intellectual Disabilities
Mental problems:
- Irritability
- Crying
- Depression
The life expectancy of someone with Tay-Sachs is also severely shortened. Most children with the disease do not live past the age of five.
Given the severe nature of the disease, the quality of life for someone with Tay-Sachs is very poor. There is no known cure for the disease, and treatment is limited to managing the symptoms.
