Recognizing Ulcerative Colitis in Infants: Symptoms & What to Do
It is always difficult to determine when a baby has a serious condition because they are incapable of overt communication. The parent or guardian must learn to observe health by other methods. Ulcerative colitis is particularly challenging.
Instructions
Watch the baby for diarrhea, fever, constant crying and abdominal pain that is relentless.
Take the baby to the doctor, so she can prescribe a regimen of medication. Watch for relapses. Doctors are loathe to question their own diagnosis. They will keep ordering the same medications. If your baby doesn't respond, get a second opinion. Watch for dehydration.
Look for long-term results of ulcerative colitis, which include rectal bleeding, mucous-like stools, weight loss, poor development, or lack of sexual development.
Upon correct diagnosis, the baby will be treated with steroids. The illness may be long-term or a one-time situation.
Follow the treatment of the child and if no response within a week, call the doctor.
