Military Service & STDs: Disqualifications and Waivers
It depends on the specific STD and the branch of the military. Generally speaking, most STDs are disqualifying for military service, but some may be waiverable on a case-by-case basis.
For example, the Army, Navy, and Air Force all have policies that prohibit the enlistment of individuals with certain STDs, including:
- HIV/AIDS
- Syphilis
- Gonorrhea
- Chlamydia
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
However, the Marine Corps does not have a policy that specifically prohibits the enlistment of individuals with STDs. Instead, the Marine Corps evaluates each case on a case-by-case basis to determine whether an individual with an STD is qualified for service.
If you are interested in joining the military and have an STD, it is important to speak with a recruiter to discuss your specific situation and to determine whether you may be eligible for a waiver.
