How to Soak Epson Salts for Constipation
Epsom salts (Magnesium Sulfate U.S.P.) is an oral hypersmotic. Oral hypersmotics "drain water into [the] colon from [the] surrounding body tissues to allow easier passage of stool," says the Mayo Clinic. Epsom salts are readily available in drugstores and are dissolved in water for internal use. Always consult with your doctor before beginning a constipation treatment.Things You'll Need
- Water
- 1 to 4 teaspoons of Epsom salts
- 8 ounces of water
Instructions
Dissolve two to four level teaspoons of Epsom salt in an 8-ounce glass of water for adults and children aged 12 and older.
Dissolve one to two level teaspoons of Epsom salt in an 8-ounce glass of water for children aged 6 to 12 years.
Stir until completely dissolved.
Drink the entire glass in one sitting. Take one dose every four hours, but do not exceed two doses per day.
