Colostrum: What is it and Why is it Important for Calves?

The milk produced by a cow soon after giving birth is called colostrum. It is not pre partum milk. Colostrum is a thick, yellowish fluid that is rich in nutrients and antibodies. It provides essential nutrition for the newborn calf and helps to protect it from infection. Colostrum is only produced for a short period of time, typically for the first few days after calving. After that, the cow begins to produce regular milk.
