Digestive System Organs: A Comprehensive Overview
Oral cavity (mouth):- Lips
- Teeth
- Tongue
- Salivary glands
Pharynx:
- Fauces (opening from the mouth to the pharynx)
- Tonsils
- Epiglottis (flap that covers the trachea during swallowing)
Esophagus:
- Muscular tube that connects the pharynx to the stomach
Stomach:
- J-shaped organ that stores and partially digests food
- Gastric glands secrete gastric juice, which contains hydrochloric acid and enzymes
Small intestine:
- Divided into three sections: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum
- Main site for nutrient absorption
- Pancreas secretes pancreatic juice, which contains enzymes to further break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats
- Liver secretes bile, which helps in the digestion and absorption of fats
Large intestine (colon):
- Absorbs water and electrolytes from the remaining food material
- Stores waste until it is eliminated
Rectum:
- Final portion of the large intestine
- Stores stool until it is passed out of the body
Anus:
- Outlet of the digestive system
- Stool is expelled through the anus
