Understanding the Large Intestine: Location, Function & Anatomy

The large intestine, also known as the colon, is located in the abdominal cavity. It begins at the ileocecal valve, where the small intestine connects to the large intestine, and ends at the rectum. The large intestine is responsible for absorbing water and electrolytes from digested food, and for storing and passing solid waste.
