Food Poisoning & Diarrhea: Relief & Recovery Tips
Foodborne diarrhea usually clears up on its own in a few days, but the following could help you feel better:
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to replace the fluids lost through diarrhea. Water, broth and oral electrolyte solutions are good options. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate you.
Bland diet: Eat a bland diet that is easy on the stomach, such as rice, potatoes, bananas and toast. Avoid foods that are high in fat, fiber or spices, as these can irritate the intestines and worsen diarrhea.
Over-the-counter medications: Over-the-counter medications such as loperamide (Imodium) and bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) can help slow down diarrhea. Do not give these medications to children under 2 years old without talking to your doctor.
Rest: Get plenty of rest to allow your body to recover.
Seek medical attention: If your diarrhea is severe, lasts for more than 2 days or is accompanied by fever, vomiting or bloody stools, seek medical attention. You may need to be treated with antibiotics or other medications.
