Nervous Stomach: Causes, Relief & Simple Remedies
The term nervous stomach is usually used to describe an upset stomach that occurs because of too much stress in a person's life. A nervous stomach can be painful, with feelings of intense pressure, gas and diarrhea. Belching and loose bowels often accompany a nervous stomach. There are few things one can do to relieve a nervous stomach, other than removing the causes of stress and waiting it out.Things You'll Need
- Peppermint
- Pepto Bismol
Instructions
Remove any causes of stress. If you have a nervous stomach due to stress, walk away from the person or situation that is stressing you. If weather permits, go outside and get a breath of fresh air.
Stop drinking or eating foods that contain caffeine. Because caffeine is a stimulant, it speeds up the heart rate, which can cause anxiety, which can upset a stomach.
Take an over-the-counter stomach relief medicine such as Pepto Bismol, which will help coat your stomach and relieve discomfort.
Eat a piece of peppermint candy or drink peppermint tea. Peppermint helps calm the stomach and with digestion issues.
Don't hold in your bowel movements. If you have to go, then go. Holding your bowel movements can lead to stomach cramping, which will compound your nervous stomach issues.
