Blood sugar test: A blood sugar test measures the amount of glucose in your blood. This is the most common test used to diagnose diabetes. \- A fasting blood sugar test is done after you have not eaten for at least 8 hours. \- A random blood sugar test can be done at any time. \- An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) measures your blood sugar levels after you drink a sugary liquid.
A1c test: An A1c test measures your average blood sugar level over the past 2 to 3 months.
Risk factors: Your doctor may also recommend testing for diabetes if you have risk factors for the condition, such as:

\- Having a family history of diabetes
\- Being physically inactive
\- Having high blood pressure
\- Having high cholesterol
\- Having a history of gestational diabetes
