Becoming a Diabetes Nurse: Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state where you plan to practice
Additional Qualifications:
- Specialized training in diabetes care, such as:
- Board-certified diabetes care and education specialist (BC-DES) credential from the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE)
- Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in diabetes
- Experience working with people with diabetes
- Strong knowledge of diabetes pathophysiology, management strategies, and complications
- Excellent communication and patient education skills
- Up-to-date knowledge of current evidence-based practices in diabetes management
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Compassion, patience, and a strong commitment to providing quality care to people with diabetes
