Physical Exam

There are underlying medical conditions that have symptoms which will either mimic depression or be a result of depression. The physician will first do a physical exam.
Laboratory Tests
-
There are several tests a doctor may order. According to the Mayo clinic, a complete blood count, also known as a CBC, will most likely be taken. The physician may also want to check thyroid function and screen for drugs and alcohol.
Psychological Evaluation

During the psychological evaluation, the physician or mental health provider will gather information about symptoms, as well as the severity and duration of those symptoms and their effect on daily life.
Diagnostic Criteria
-
The criteria for every mental disorder is listed in a manual that is published by the American Psychiatric Association, called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
Final Diagnosis
-
Once a depressive disorder is confirmed, the physician will discuss the exact diagnosis and treatment options.
