Cymbalta is an anti-depressant medication that comes from the SNRI class. Cymbalta is not an MAO Inhibitor, and it is important to understand both classes of drugs in order to safely and effectively use anti-depressants.-
SNRI Definition

SNRI stands for serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. SNRIs keep the serotonin and norepinephrine from being reabsorbed in order to increase their levels in the brain.
MAOI Definition

MAOI stands for monoamine oxidase inhibitor. MAOIs increase levels of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine by keeping them from being broken down.
Side Effects

Both MAOIs and SNRIs can cause feelings of nausea, drowsiness, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, sexual problems, blurred vision, restlessness and sweating. The degree and prevalence of these side effects vary depending on the individual's body chemistry.
Warnings

Cymbalta and MAOIs should never be taken together. Wait 14 days after taking an MAOI before starting Cymbalta, and wait five days after taking Cymbalta before starting an MAOI.
