Effective Natural Remedies for Flu and Cold Symptoms
Colds and flu viruses have no known cure. The best approach is to simply ride them out. Relieving many of the key symptoms--sneezing, coughing, sinus congestion and runny nose among them- -will alleviate suffering. Here are a number of natural methods approved by the AMA and most medical organizations.-
Drink Plenty of Liquids
-
Water and fruit juice keep your throat and nasal passage moist, which helps to break up mucus. Fruit juice also contains Vitamin C, which works as an antibiotic.
Salt Water
-
Warm salt water can help treat a sore throat by loosening mucus and keeping the passages moist. Gargle it, but don't swallow.
Humidity
-
Warm, humid air reduces congestion and can eliminate a runny nose. Inhale steam from hot water or take a shower. When exposing yourself to humidity, be sure to inhale through your nose.
Rest
-
The less activity you undertake, the more energy your body has to fight the virus. Stay off your feet when you have a cold and avoid engaging in any serious activity.
Nasal Sprays
-
Natural nasal sprays can be made by mixing 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon salt into warm water. You can then gently spray it into your nose with a bulb syringe and allow it to drain.
