Severe Mucus Drainage: Causes, Relief & When to See a Doctor
Mucus drainage, also referred to as post-nasal drip, involves mucus building up in the nose and throat and then dripping down. This unpleasant sensation can lead to symptoms like coughing and sore throat. If you have a severe case, you'll want to look for ways to cure the condition.
Instructions
Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your severe mucus drainage. Tell her about any other symptoms you may be experiencing, including headaches, fever, chills and sinus pressure. This is important, because mucus drainage is often caused by allergies, viruses and structural problems.
Use a nasal spray as directed by your doctor. A steroid nasal spray is often effective for curing severe mucus drainage. You'll use the spray one or two times a day, gently misting the inside of each nostril. Common steroidal nasal sprays include Flonase and Nasonex. An over-the-counter decongestant spray such as Afrin may also be recommended by your doctor.
Take an oral allergy medication. Your doctor may suggest an over-the-counter antihistamine such as Benadryl, Tavist, Claritin and Zyrtec.
Ask your doctor about using a mucus thinning agent. Guaifenesin, found in many products, is one drug given to help mucus pass more easily.
Drink more water. Increased intake of fluids can prevent mucus from thickening.
Avoid any allergens that could be causing you to experience severe mucus drainage. This includes pollen, dust, mold and animal dander. Steer clear of substances that can irritate your nose as well, such as cigarette smoke, perfume and aerosol sprays.
