Severe Frostbite: Understanding Tissue Damage and Amputation Risk

Very serious frostbite can cause the affected parts of your body to become hard and black, a condition known as dry gangrene. This is a result of the complete loss of blood flow to the affected area. If the frostbite is not treated promptly, the tissue may eventually die and need to be amputated.
