Heimlich Maneuver: Step-by-Step Guide to Help a Choking Victim
The Heimlich maneuver, also known as abdominal thrusts, is a first-aid procedure used to help someone who is choking. It is a simple and effective way to dislodge a foreign object from the airway.
To perform the Heimlich maneuver:
1. Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist.
2. Place one hand between the person's navel and rib cage.
3. Grasp your fist with your other hand and pull it inward and upward, using quick, forceful thrusts.
4. Continue until the object is dislodged or the person begins to breathe again.
If the person is unconscious, lay them on their back and begin CPR.
Here are some additional tips for performing the Heimlich maneuver:
* For a child, use your one hand instead of both hands.
* If you are pregnant or have a large abdomen, use your chest instead of your abdomen to perform the thrusts.
* If the person is obese, use your arms instead of your hands to perform the thrusts.
* Do not perform the Heimlich maneuver if the person is not choking.
The Heimlich maneuver is a safe and effective way to help someone who is choking. If you see someone choking, do not hesitate to act.
