What is Hardening of an artery in medical terms?
Hardening of the artery is a medical condition known as atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis is a condition where the walls of the arteries become thickened, hardened and lose their elasticity due to the buildup of fatty deposits, cholesterol, plaque, cellular waste, and inflammation on the arterial walls. This makes it difficult for the arteries to deliver oxygen and nutrients-rich blood to the tissues and organs.
Risk factors for atherosclerosis include:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Family history of heart disease
- Physical activity
